BACKGROUND AND PROGRESS

Sri Petaling (formerly known as Bandar Baru Seri Petaling), is a main suburb in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is located at the south of the city near Happy Garden, Kuchai Lama and Bukit Jalil. This suburbwas developed in 1981. Before the suburb was established, it used to bea rubber plantation land and hills. In between mid 80s to the mid 90s, it was well known as the 'rubbish area' as it was a large garbagedisposal land. The garbage disposal land is no more in use and it isnot visible today as it was converted into a playground and car park area for the '98 Commonwealth Games. Population in Sri Petalingwas not high in the early years as it was really far from the city and isolated. The population grew in the late 80s when two passageways tothe next suburb namely Salak Selatan aka Salak South & Taman Gembira aka Happy Garden was open. The growth of population did not stop there as more development has been done over the decade. In 1997, Shah Alam Expressway was open and allowing people to travel to Subang Jaya area within 10 minutes. This Shah Alam Expressway was one of the reasons for the rapid growth in Sri Petaling.

There are some baking academies, church, cafes and stuff for all ages, making Seri Petaling a well known place among teenagers and adults. There is also a Seri Petaling Community Centre which is often used to play badminton by Seri Petaling residents, it has a football field, basketball court and a playground for children. Sri Petaling LRT station is an LRT station in Sri Petaling, a suburb about 20 km south of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. The original name was Komanwel LRT station, where "Komanwel" is the Malay spelling for "Commonwealth".  The station is on the Sri Petaling Line and is the southern terminus for passenger services on the line.  Sri Petaling LRT station was opened in 1998, along with 17 other stations, which at that time formed Star LRT Phase 2. It was then renamed Sri Petaling Line to avoid confusion from names that differ only in the phase number. SHOPPING, LEISURE & ENTERTAINMENT

Sri Petaling, which has since grown to become one of the most sought after property residences in the capital of Kuala Lumpur has many to offer. It is located just next the sporting township of Bukit Jalil where you can find the Stadium Bukit Jalil a world class stadium that was built for the then 1998 Commonwealth Games. it also has an indoor stadium known as Stadium Putra and an indoor swimming pool as well. There are many condominiums and apartments located around here which also houses the Malaysia Sports school.

Sri Petaling also has its own shopping mall in Endah Parade which includes its own hypermarket in Carrefour, its own gymnasium and many food outlets. You can be sure to find KFC, McDonalds, Shakey's Pizza and Esquire Kitchen here, all known to locals as popular food outlets. For those who wishes to relax and unwind you can head out to the many reflexology centers there as well as some Yoga places.

Apart from that, you can also do your shopping at the newly opened The Store which is a great place to buy your groceries and toiletries with some eateries here which include Marrybrown fried chicken and a food court.  For night life lovers, there are two Night Markets on separate nights,one is located at the front of The Store which opens every Tuesday andthe other one which opens every Friday, located along the street nextto the BHP Petrol Station.

From its humble beginnings in the early 1980s when it was known for its isolated location and the rubbish dump nearby to the now almost fully developed modern township with its own fishing pond, shopping mall and some world class sporting facilities nearby, Sri Petaling has come a long way. There used to be one trunk road that comes here but today, it is connected with more than 2 expressways with a new one just added in, the Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway. It is now possible to get to Sri Petaling within 10 minutes drive from the city center.
